President Woodrow Wilson’s childhood home, Augusta is known worldwide for The Masters golf tournament, an event which brings 200,000 visitors to the city every spring. Augusta itself is home to over 197,000 people and is the second largest city in Georgia after Atlanta.
Augusta’s satellite cities and suburbs include Martinez, Poverty Hills, Belvedere Evans, Beech Island, Clearwater, Burnettown, Graniteville, Grovetown, and Spiderweb. Fort Gordon, a major US Army military base, lies just to southwest of Augusta.
In addition to the revenue generated by The Masters, Augusta is a center for the biotech, medical, and cyber security industries. The largest employers in the city are Augusta University, the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site, and the US Army Cyber Center of Excellence based at Fort Gordon.
Augusta’s subtropical climate results in very hot, humid summers with average highs of 90 to 100℉ and an average annual rainfall of over 43 inches. Winters are mild and short, with little snowfall but the possibility of freezing rain.
