Columbus, Georgia, is famous for being the site of the last battle of the Civil War, fought on Easter Sunday, April 16, 1895 by forces unaware the war had officially ended. John Pemberton, who was wounded in the battle, would go on to invent Coca-Cola.
Once a major textile manufacturer, the city of nearly 190,000 people offers a mix of modern and historic buildings. Columbus’ satellite cities and suburbs include Phenix City, Cusseta, Box Springs, Catakula, Bibb city, and Crawford. Fort Benning, a US Army military base on the Alabama-Georgia border is located just to the southeast of Columbus.
Fort Benning is a major source of income for Columbus, with over 38,000 Columbus residents working for the base in some capacity. The city is home to the corporate headquarters of Aflac, RealTree, and W.C. Bradley.
Like most of Georgia, Columbus has a subtropical climate with hot humid summers where temperatures can reach the mid-90s. Lows in the Winter months reach the upper 30s. The city sees little to no snowfall in the winter, and 48 inches of rain a year. With an average of 214 sunny days a year, Columbus offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities.
