Overlooking the only inland white sand beach along the Gulf Coast, Lake Charles, LA is a vibrant town known for its strong Creole heritage, an exciting array of festivals, and Vegas-style gaming. Notorious pirate Jean Lafitte once frequented the region, and legends abound of the hidden treasure he buried on the lake shore.
Founded in 1861, Lake Charles is the fifth-largest incorporated city in the Acadiana region of southwest Louisiana. The city is located on two lakes--Lake Charles itself and Prien Lake--and the Calcasieu River. Because of its proximity to so much water, the city is often called the Lake Area, and its port connects to the Gulf of Mexico by the Calcasieu Ship Channel.
Close to Vinton, Sulphur, Prien, Westlake, Moss Bluff, and Carlyss, Lake hosts over a hundred festivals and carnivals a year, including Mardi Gras and the always popular Louisiana Pirate Festivals, in which Jean Lafitte and his buccaneers force the city’s mayor to walk the plank.
With several petrochemical plants and an oil refinery dotted along the Calcasieu Ship Channel, Lake Charles is home to several petrochemical and energy companies as well as aerospace, agribusiness, and advanced manufacturing businesses. The city of the retail center for the five-parish area and is home to two casinos.
Year-round temperatures reach a high of 91°F and a low of 47°F. Annual rainfall averages 57.53 inches. Summer lasts from late May to late September, with high humidity common from April to October.
