ABOUT THE TULSA AREA

Called one of America’s most livable cities by Partners for Livable Communities, Tulsa is the second largest city in Oklahoma and a center for the finance, aviation, and telecommunications industries. Home to two NCAA Division I sports teams, the city is a thriving cultural center, with art galleries, festivals, museums, and many examples of art deco architecture.

Tulsa is served by the Tulsa International Airport (TUL). The city’s satellite cities and suburbs include Broken Arrow, New Tulsa, Oakhurst, Leonard, Sapulpa Broken Arrow, New Tulsa, Catoosa, Jenks, Oakhurst, and Coweta. Oklahoma City is a ninety-minute drive to the southwest, while Wichita, Kansas lies 175 miles to the northwest.

Tulsa was once known as the oil capital of the world, and the city is still home to important oil and gas-related companies, including Syntroleum, Laredo Petroleum, and Excel Energy. In addition, Tulsa is a manufacturing powerhouse, producing 60 percent of all products exported from Oklahoma. The city is an important center for the commercial banking, energy trading, asset management, and investment industries.

Visitors to Tulsa have plenty to enjoy during their stay, including the 200-exhibit Oklahoma Aquarium and the Tulsa Zoo. Try your luck at one of the city’s casinos or relax at the Tulsa Municipal Rose Garden. The Tulsa Air and Space Museum and Planetarium is a great day outing for science buffs, while shoppers can hunt the sixty upscale stores of Utica Square. If you're in town in late September and early October, the Tulsa State Fair shouldn’t be missed--every year the ten-day fair attracts over a million people.

Sports fans can cheer on Tulsa’s minor league sports teams, including the Tulsa Drillers, a Texas League AA team who play at ONEOK Field, and the Tulsa Oilers of the ECHL, who hit the ice at the BOK center. Collegiate sports are even more popular. The city has two University teams who compete in the NCAA Division I: The Oral Roberts University Golden Eagles and the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

Tulsa has a temperate climate with cool, mild winters and little snow. Summers are hot, with temperatures regularly reaching 90 Fahrenheit or more between May and September. April through June typically sees thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible, although usually restricted to the plains around the city. The city has 225 days of sunshine annually and approximately 40 inches of precipitation every year.

We understand not every visit to Tulsa is for pleasure or business. If you’re seeking medical care, Tusla is home to the Saint Francis Hospital, as well as the St. John Medical Center.
