ABOUT THE GREENVILLE AREA

The fastest-growing city in South Carolina, Greenville is named after Revolutionary War hero Nathaniel Green. Ranked as one of America’s Best Downtowns by Forbes, Greenville features lush green parks alongside growing biotech and automotive research industries, art galleries, and excellent restaurants. Our WoodSpring Suites extended stay hotels offer comfortable suite layouts, weekly rates, and nightly rates, free wi-fi, and free parking, guest laundry and vending, and some smoking/non-smoking and pet-friendly rooms at select locations. Woodspring’s extended stay hotels in the region include one in Greenville itself, one in Simpsonville, and one in Spartanburg.

Greenville is served by three airports: the Donaldson Center Airport, the Greenville Downtown Airport, and the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport. Charlotte, North Carolina is a two-hour drive to the northeast, while Atlanta, Georgia is two hours to the southwest.

In the early twentieth century, Greenville was known as the textile capital of the world. Since then, the city’s economy has diversified.  Greenville is the North American headquarters for Michelin, Amerco, Southern Tide, and the AVX Corporation. The International Center for Automatic Research, created in 2003, has made automotive research an important part of the economy, while the development of land once housing the Donaldson Air Force Base brought Lockheed Martin, 3M, and Honeywell to Greenville.

Looking for something to do in Greenville? Get outside and into nature at the Falls Park on the Reedy River, or check out the giant anteater exhibit at the Greenville Zoo. Shoppers will find all manner of treasures at Haywood Mall, while history buffs can dig into the past at the Museum & Library of Confederate History. Kids and adults alike love Mice on Main, a scavenger hunt to find nine tiny bronze mice along Main Street.

Collegiate teams dominate the sports scene at Greenville. The Furman Paladins compete in the NCAA Division I football league and play at Paladin Stadium. Bob Jones University fields the Bruins, who compete in men’s and women’s soccer and bac]sketball, while the North Greenville University athletics department fields soccer, volleyball, and baseball teams. For something a little different, take in a Greenville Gaels hurling game.

Greenville has four distinct seasons, with short, cool winters and hot, humid summers. The city receives approximately 47 inches of precipitation a year, about four inches of which comes from snowfall. Average July temperatures hover around 80 Fahrenheit, while winters see about 59 nights where the temperature drops below freezing. Ice storms and sleet can occur in the winter and early spring.

We understand that not every visit to Greenville is for pleasure or business. Greenville boasts some excellent medical facilities, including the Greenville Memorial Hospital and Hillcrest Memorial Hospital. The University of Southern Carolina School of Medicine also calls Greenville home.
